Welcome to the City of Helena (click here for actual web site link)

"Helena has been a special home for many well before it came to be known by that name.  The area teemed with a wide variety of wildlife and was inhabited by indigenous peoples well before its "discovery" in 1864.  At that time, four miners, famously known as the "Four Georgians" chanced on the area during one of several trips across the territory in search of gold.  They were successful in their venture at what they called "Last Chance Gulch."  Word of their find spread and many others flocked to the gulch.  A burgeoning community then developed and became a full-fledged town, having their first town meeting in the fall of that year.  A name was chosen by vote and Helena was selected, being a suggestion made by an area miner in tribute to his hometown.  It did not formally incorporate until seventeen years later in March of 1881.  Helena ultimately became the capital of the forty-first state in the union in 1894, five years after Montana's statehood had been achieved.  It has since continued its very influential role in Montana's politics, industry, agriculture, and cultural affairs.

Helena and the surrounding area offer year round opportunities for everyone, whether you're a resident or visitor.  The landscape provides varied outdoor activity from boating, fishing and hunting to hiking, biking, skiing and golf, to name a few.  The Helena community also hosts a symphony, theaters, art and historical museums to satisfy one's cultural interests.  Helena's rich history also affords a variety of historical buildings, including the Saint Helena Cathedral, the Montana State Capitol, Helena's famed Westside Mansion District, an historic downtown walking mall and many others."

Incidentally, Helena's elevation is 4,090 feet from sea level and the annual average moisture is between 11-13" per year.  The Helena Valley is "technically" water rich. This is a semi-arrid region by rainfall standards.  You have four seasons, ample mountains (trees), valley's, dessert type conditions, lakes, rivers and streams. A multitude of recreational opportunities to fit the most enthusiastic outdoorsman.

"Helena has been affectionately referred to as the "Queen City of the Rockies" and more recently the "Best Small Arts Town in America."  However you'd like to think of it, Helena means home.  The leaders and employees of the City of Helena welcome you to our home and please let us know if we can be of service to you, whether you are just visiting or maybe staying longer."
